BOOK REVIEWS

Joan Pastor's thorough understanding of the real life of an auditor makes this book easy to read and extremely useful. The exercises at the end of each chapter are great tools, whether you are the CAE or the newest staff member. Recently, I used one of her exercises on how to prepare for a meeting and the strategies to be developed at the beginning of the audit. The outcome was a very special and rewarding meeting for the internal auditors and all the others in attendance. This book is truly insightful in terms of understanding the fundamentals of human relations, both professional (audit) and personal (family and friends). This is a “must read" book for internal auditors.

This book addresses issues outside our comfort zone in a way that we can understand and relate to. Joan Pastor tells us that it's O.K. to be clueless about conflict resolution, then coaches us through it, giving us the skills we need to navigate through these sometimes gut-wrenching waters. The best part is that these skills enhance not only our work lives, but our home lives, our friendships, and our family relationships as well. This is a book to add to your personal library, and to revisit every few months.

Dr. Pastor provides a clear, concise, and insightful roadmap for auditors to use in managing assignments. Auditors, by the nature of their work, are change agents. This book provides a wealth of tools and techniques to enable auditors to lead, drive, and facilitate change in a variety of settings.   It should be required reading for anyone regardless of profession engaged in facilitating change efforts.

Dr. Pastor provides methods that are easy to understand and apply in identifying critical differences that may exist between you, the auditor, and the audit client. She then takes this to the next essential level by offering the necessary solutions that will pretty much guarantee resolution, thus resulting in successful and value-added audit results. My application of some of Dr. Pastor's methods during a recent entrance meeting with management has already proven to be very successful!

Joan does an excellent job of marrying her background in psychology with knowledge of internal auditing to offer a new perspective on how auditors should approach conflict resolution and negotiation. This is a core skill for auditors, something they face every day, and her approaches and applications should be invaluable to both new and experienced auditors alike, providing understanding of how all discussions with audit clients can have the potential to be a positive experience – one where both sides can understand the benefits and work toward a true solution. This book is almost as good as being at one of Joan’s seminars.
